Our View: Digital Transformation

CEO, Enterprise Greece

Greece is making strides in its digital transformation. In terms of broadband networks, 5G, high value startups and other indicators, Greece has made enormous progress and in many cases is close to or ahead of the European average, according to the recent 2024 State of the Digital Decade report by the European Commission.
Particularly noteworthy has been the digitalization of public services. Today, Greece’s gov.gr platform ̶ which was launched just four years ago ̶ offers 1,820 public services in 11 different categories, up from 503 when it began in March 2020. A total of 8.5 million citizens have now used the platform to issue a document or complete a digital service. In total, almost 290 million documents have been issued through gov.gr to date.
More than 3.8 million citizens have also installed the government’s digital wallet application and can now access key documents – like an identity card or a driver’s license – on their mobile phones. And, recently, the government launched an artificial intelligence support function for its digital public services, the first ever AI application in public administration.
From day-to-day public services to giant data centers, Greece is building its new digital economy.
