Greek wines exports are commanding growing market share and higher prices in world markets, highlighting how the country’s wine producers have steadily gained recognition from oenophiles around the globe.

In 2022, exports of Greek wine rose sharply both in quantity – and, more importantly, in value – based on the latest official data. Compared with a year earlier, wine exports rose 6.6% in volume terms last year to 29.9 tons, while jumping 16.8% in value terms to €99 million, according to provisional data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority.

With more than 300 indigenous grape varieties found throughout the country, many of them cultivated since ancient times, and an exceptionally wide range of terroirs, Greece is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising wine producers.

Traditionally known for its white wines, Greece also produces a growing selection of red and rosé wines that have been growing in popularity and received increased recognition over the past few years.

Responding to this heightened appreciation, Greek producers turned out in record numbers at last month’s ProWein trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany, Europe’s leading wine exhibition. Greece’s national pavilion was organized by Enterprise Greece and drew a record 64 participants that included the country’s top wine producers from across Greece.
