Greece top performing tourism destination despite global uncertainty

Despite global uncertainty, Greece’s tourism industry is on course for another strong year in 2026 after last year’s record season, underscoring the continuing resilience in Greek tourism and easing fears that conflict in the Middle East would hit the country’s key economic sector.

Recent data – including airport arrivals, hotel occupancy rates, short-term rentals – all show a strong uptick in demand. Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport increased by 4.5% year-on-year, reaching nearly 15.75 million passengers in the first half of 2026, while short-term rental bookings are up more than 10% for July through September, and average spend per trip in the first quarter rose 8.6% over 2025 to €516.

And the latest European Travel Commission quarterly report identifies Greece as one of Europe’s standout destinations in the first half, supported by demand from key European markets and higher visitor spending.

“Greece stood out as one of Europe’s strongest performers, with spending up 64.3% and arrivals up 38.3%, pointing to significantly higher spend per trip,” the report notes.

With its white-washed island villages, Mediterranean climate and rich cultural heritage, Greece is one of the world’s Top 10 tourism destinations. Tourism constitutes approximately one-fifth of Greece’s economy and accounts for roughly one in five jobs, last year attracting 38 million visitors and collecting almost €24 billion in travel receipts. And with a string of recent records, Greece has attracted significant foreign investment to its hospitality sector. Estimates indicate that around 700 new hotels have been opened or refurbished in the past five years, accompanied by approximately €12 billion in hotel investments.

The conflict in the Middle East and accompanying concerns about air fares appear mainly to have impacted tourism flows from the U.S., while European demand remains strong, say market analysts. At the same time, there are clear indications that the shoulder seasons are growing in popularity, contributing to an overall positive outlook for 2026 tourism in Greece.
